Infrared Moisture gauge MG-03 is a back scatter gauge in which pulses of infrared light at chosen wavelengths are focussed on to the material and diffusely scattered light is then collected and fed to an infrared detector. Here the sensor unit is separated from microcomputer based electronic unit to facilitate mounting on top of a conveyor for on-line moisture measurement in powdered or granular type of materials.
Many food materials, especially if made-p of fine particles is well represented by its surface layer .
For successful on-line near infrared moisture measurement, the material must be of powder, crystalline, fibrous or flaky form, although pelletized or bulky products of a wide range of particle sizes are amenable to this method providing their surface is representative of the material as a whole.
CEERI, Chennai has conducted investigations successfully with tea powders and wheat flour and biscuits and some food additives.

This is a stand alone moisture gauge that uses the principle of selective absorption of infrared radiation by water molecules. Reflection or otherwise known as backscatter type infrared moisture sensor is suitable for measuring surface moisture in bulk materials like tea, bagasse, chemicals, processed foods and other industrials raw materials.
